*Cheese and Dairy... Well a lot of people don't realize what rennet is, it was already talked about but people keep asking so... *most* cheese unless it clearly says otherwise has animals based rennet in it which is the stomach lining of slaughtered newly-born calves, a lot of the times they are taken right away from there mothers which are usually dairy cows, usually they are cut open when they are still alive when the people are trying to take there stomach contents. So that is killing and a lot of people think cheese is cruel free and vegetarian which obviously it mostly isn't. So dairy cows which are the mothers of these rennet calves are kept in bad conditions there calves are taking away from them and life is not great at all! oh and then they get killed when they stop producing enough

*Eggs... battery hens are kept in horrible conditions, The battery hen is an anxious, frustrated, fear-ridden birds forced to spend 10-12 months squeezed inside a small wire cage with up to 9 other tormented hens. Caged for life without exercise while constantly drained of calcium to form egg shells, battery hens develop the severe osteoporosis of intensive confinement know as caged layer fatigue. Calcium depleted, millions of hens become paralysed and die of hunger and thirst inches from their food and water. Battery hens are debeaked with a hot machine blade once and often twice during their lives, typically at one day old and again at seven weeks old, because a young beak will often grow back. Debeaking causes severe, chronic pain and suffering which researchers compare to human phantom limb and stump pain. Between the horn and bone of the beak is a thick layer of highly sensitive tissue. The hot blade cuts through this sensitive tissue impairing the hen's ability to eat, drink, wipe her beak, and preen normally. Debeaking is done to offset the effects of the compulsive pecking that can afflict birds designed by nature to roam, scratch, and peck at the ground all day, not sit in prison; and to save feed costs and promote conversion of less food into more eggs. Debeaked birds have impaired grasping ability and are in pain and distress, therefore eating less, flinging their food less, and "wasting" less energy than intact birds.

*"Free Range" Eggs...In order to get laying hens you have to have fertile eggs and half the eggs will hatch into male chicks. These are killed at once or raised as table birds (usually these days in broiler houses) and slaughtered as soon as they reach an economic weight. So for every free-range hen happily scratching around the garden or farm who, if she were able to bargain, might pay rent with her daily infertile egg, a corresponding male from her batch is enduring life in a broiler house or has already been subjected to slaughter or thrown away to die. Every year in Britain alone more than 35 million day-old male chicks are killed. They are mainly used for fertilizer or dumped in landfill sites. The hens are also culled as soon as their production drops. Also be aware that many sites classed as free range aren't really free range, they're just massive barns with access to the outside. Since the food and light are inside the chickens rarely venture outside. So any barn with a door can be considered "free range" which is pathetic.

*Gelatin is not vegetarian, It is made from boiled bones, skins, hoofs, tendons and ligaments of cows, pigs, fish and other animals, I don't see how so called vegetarians call them selfs that when they admit they eat gelatin but say they don't eat meat.

*Bees and Honey... Bees are killed in the production of honey, in the worst case the whole hive may be destroyed if the keeper doesn't wish to protect them over the winter. Not all beekeepers do this, but the general practice is one that embodies the attitude that living things are mere *material* and have no intrinsic value of their own other than what commercial value we can wrench from them. Artificial insemination involving death of the male is now also the norm for generation of new queen bees. The favoured method of obtaining bee sperm is by pulling off the insects head. Decapitation sends an electrical impulse to the nervous system which causes sexual arousal. The lower half of the headless bee is then squeezed to make it ejaculate. The resulting liquid is collected in a hypodermic syringe.

*Cochineal/Carmine...Cochineal is a bright red colouring matter made from the dried bodies of a Mexican insect Dactylopius coccus. Billions of these insects are raised and destroyed each year for a red colouring that is used in desserts, some strawberry soya milks, clothing, etc.

*Silk...It is the practice to boil the cocoons that still contain the living moth larvae in order to obtain the silk. This produces longer silk threads than if the moth was allowed to emerge. The silkworm can certainly feel pain and will recoil and writhe when injured.

*Wool... Scientists over the years have bred a Merino sheep which is exaggeratedly wrinkled. The more wrinkles, the more wool. Unfortunately, greater profits are rarely in the sheep's best interests. In Australia, more wrinkles mean more perspiration and greater susceptibility to fly-strike, a ghastly condition resulting from maggot infestation in the sweaty folds of the sheep's over-wrinkled skin. To counteract this, farmers now perform an 'operation' without anaesthetic call 'mulesing' in which sections of flesh around the anus are sliced away, leaving a painful bloody wound.

Without human interference, sheep would grow just enough wool to protect them from the weather, but scientific breeding techniques have ensured that these animals have become wool-producing monstrosities.

Their unnatural overload of wool (often half their body weight) brings added misery during summer months when they often die from heat exhaustion. One million sheep die in Australia alone each year from exposure to cold after shearing.

Every year, in Australia alone, about ten million lambs die before they are more than a few days old. This is due largely to unmanageable numbers of sheep and inadequate stockmen. Of UK wool, 27% is "skin wool," pulled from the skins of slaughtered sheep and lambs.

*Down/Feathers... The process of live-plucking is wide spread. The terrified birds are lifted by their necks, with their legs tied, and then have all their body feathers ripped out. The struggling geese sustain injuries and after their ordeal are thrown back to join their fellow victims until their turn comes round again. This torture, which has been described as "extremely cruel" by veterinary surgeons and even geese breeders, begins when the geese are only eight weeks old. It is then repeated at eight week intervals for two or three more sessions. The birds are then slaughtered. The main countries using this cruel process are China, Poland and Hungary, where some 60 per cent of down produced is live-plucked. The down market in the UK alone is worth around 2.6 million pounds per year. The "lucky" birds are plucked dead, i.e. they are killed first and then plucked.

*Protein... Should I be worried about getting enough protein on a vegan diet? No, not as long as you're taking in enough calories. Official recommendations suggest that eating 8% of our daily energy as protein will provide an adequate amount. National and international recommendations for protein intake are based on animal sources of protein such as meat, cow's milk and eggs. Plant proteins may be less digestible because of intrinsic differences in the nature of the protein and the presence of other factors such as fibre, which may reduce protein digestibility by as much as 10%. Nevertheless, dietary studies show the adequacy of plant foods, as sole sources of protein as does the experience of healthy vegans of all ages.

The main protein foods in a vegan diet are the pulses (peas, beans and lentils), nuts, seeds and grains, all of which are relatively energy dense. As the average protein level in pulses is 27% of calories; in nuts and seeds 13%; and in grains 12%, it is easy to see that plant foods can supply the recommended amount of protein as long as the energy requirements are met.

*Iron..."Iron deficiency, unlike protein deficiency, sometimes is a real problem, but meat is not the answer." The American Dietetic Association said in 1988 that vegetarians don't have a higher incidence of iron deficiency than non-vegetarians.

If you are concerned about getting enough iron, avoid eating iron-rich foods along with substances that inhibit iron absorption: phytates (found in high-bran and unmilled cereals), polyphenols (such as tannins in tea) and calcium. Eat iron-rich foods along with foods containing vitamin C, which aids absorption. Good sources of iron include dried figs and prunes, dark-green leafy greens, legumes, certain whole grains such as quinoa and millet, blackstrap molasses, nuts and nutritional yeast. Acidic foods cooked in cast-iron pans are also good sources of the mineral.

WFT. Freezing tofu is another way to make it. Why would you *not* freeze and press press tofu? Unless you like eating cardboard! When you get the water out and make the tofu a spongue, it's not dry. PLUS you make it less not-dry by marinating it.
So back off from my tofu.

I always use tea balls. 'father' took the french press with him, and it's soooo annoying to have to clean out my french press mug because it's looooong and narrow and annoying to clean.

For those who care, I tried eating a pork breakfast sausage yesterday. That night I was horribly bloated and in pain. WTF.

I'm just generally angry right now. Headache, plus I need to make some fucking jewelry. My aunt wanted a pair of earrings, but mom wants me to send them to edmonton with my uncle, who, is visiting us tomorrow. Argh.

So I'm doing the vegan thing, and I can like, NOT spell vegetarian. Vegi Vege BAH. So far it's going good, on this, my second full day. For breakfast, I had what I usually had. It's a nutritional 'on-the-go' shake sort of thing by Nestle. I'd usually have it with milk, but today had it with half milk, half soy-milk. There was a sale at Save-On-Foods on soy milk in thedrinks aisle, so I picked up a couple. They're all vitasoy. I have the natural, two flavours of vanilla, and a chocolate. I'm thinking maybe After I try out the flavours, I'll freeze portions of the original flavour for baking and stuff. I was having dairy cravings this morning >>

Then I passed out until like, 1 pm. Mom and I went shopping, because we needed vanilla, and I wanted to make this 'uncheese' powder stuff. It's really good. It's kinda like mac'n cheese cheese powder. It's made with spices, arrowroot poweder, ground cashews, and Nutritional Yeast Supplement. The NYS is full of vitamin B12, which is one I wouldn't normally get, except for the bunch of vitamins I take. LOL, I take lots of vitamins LOLOLOL. I'm such a pill-popper. Yey. For lunch I had some leftovers from last night. DAVID ATE SOME OF MY BULGAR. It's so insanly good, even carnivore brother liked it. He liked the fake chicken too, but it was a bit bland. I bought a premade curry paste by Hanif (BEST PRE-MADE INDIAN STUFF EVAR) and bought the 'mild'. Next time I'll ad extra curry paste, some of my curry powder, and some of my special-secret garam masala. Hoooorah.

Yeah. I'm marinating tofu in a ... uh... marinade. I've been looking on the internets, and I found these neato tips:

To make the tofu more palatable and more suck-up-marinade ish, you wrap it in paper towels, and bonk a stack of plates on top. This squeeezes out tofu-juice, so it will be like a sponge for other flavours.

I've read you can make tofu seem 'meatier' by freezing it, and then thaw, squeeze...
I have me some tofu in the freezer, and maybe I'll try it tomorrow.

I also have frozen fake-chicken cutlets, and frozen fake-hamburgers. I'll try those, but I'll probably want to see how the tofu turns out tomorrow first. If tofu is yummy pre-frozen, then I can shove the rest of the tofu in the freezer without worrying if it's gonna go bad before eating it.

Uhhmm... I'm trying to decide what to have with the tofu. I'm feeling tired and headachy, as you may be able to see by my horrible sentance structure, so I'll probably stick with something light, maybe steam some carrot matchsticks and have some miso soup.

Note to self- buy dehydrated chinese mushrooms. Super nutritious, delicous in sushi sushi, and ... uh... good for like... wonton, sweet and sour, or miso soups.

So like, stuffs happened and shit.

I'm going back to Cal for grade 12 next year ZOMGGGZZZZZ.

I'm vegitarian now. Well, since yesterday evening. I made a very mild 'Yves' brand veggie not-chicken curry with some bulgar pilaf. Very yummy, howvever, I need to find a way to keep the bulgar from burning at the bottom. Maybe cook it different?

Anyways, mom was all "Oy, feed me." and she really liked it. So, by proxy, she's vegitarian too.

Anyways. I may be vegan, I don't know. Eggs are super-conveniant, although, come to think, I don't eat them that often. Meh. I'll say I'm vegitarian for now, and if it comes out as vegan, butts to yo mom.

Bunnies are cute as ever, however, camera's all like... in a drawer... I'd to like, open it to get the camera. Too much work man...

Go ahead and click those pics. The are ginormous. The show the prolific sushi-maker I am. There are how many, 10 sheets of seaweed in a package? I used them all. The pics show all the sushi I made, *after* mom and david ate. I am so tired, I am hardly able to eat what I made for meee. OMG SO TIRED.

My sushi rolls contained a mix of 3 or 4 of the following:

Dried Shitake mushrooms, hydrated in a super secret special recipe*
Pollock (artificial crab)
Green Onion
Avacado
Shrimp
Tomato
Celery

And of course, rice and seaweed.

And a bit of soy sauce to dip in. It makes me semi angry to remember my 'father' eating sushi, getting a spoon so that the piece of sushi roll in his dish of soy sauce, could have more soy sauce spooned over. This was the man who would be bitchy about mom and I using salt in cooking because 'it's bad for your heart.'

Only if you have an existing heart condition, dumbass. Drop dead, kthx.

I was making sushi from 4 pm to 7 pm. 3 hours of suuuushiness! I am too tired to eat my makings!

On another note, I really really really want a bunny. I am looking forward to scrubbing bunny pee out of my carpet when I litter train it. I am looking forward to scooping up bunny poo's. I want to teach bunny to swim.

You kids actually check daily? Eeeee! I know Jay messaged me in the evening on the day that I changed my blog in the morning. I will try to update more regularly. Once my new bunnies show up, I'll probably update daily on how my munchkins do. Of course, bunnies need to actually come here first. And depending on what my vet finds, they need to be born first, lol.

Anyways, as some of you know, my bunny Oreo passed away on Saturday. Boo. She was all cancer and stress and harsh antibiotics... The veterinarian felt so bad about her dying that he's paying to send her off and be cremated, and as I ranted (ront, rawnt?) up above, he's promised to find me a couple of small-breed bunnies to take care of. Since I am an informed bunny caretaker who actually knows a thing or two about bunnies, I owe it to the bunnies of this world to adopt a few babies and save them from being 'gifts' to small children who will lose patience with bunny after bunny shows that it isn't a dumb stuffed animal, and then bunny will be neglected and stuffed in a small cage and die of boredom and lonliness.

Yeah.

And if'n you know anyone who hasn't gotten me a birthday present, ya'll can band together and get me a few boxes of those "NiC storage cubes" aka "Creative cubes" or whatever. They're square grids that you can put together into shelves, but if I get a couple boxes, I can make a bunny palace. Seriously! Is teh awesome! I also need to find something I can use to make a pen so that bunnies can have lots of room, but not the whole run of my room while I'm schoolin' and stuff. Omg bunnies....
